Willa Sibert Cather (1873-1947) was an eminent American author. She spent her childhood in Red Cloud, Nebraska, the same town that has been made famous by her writing. She insisted on attending college, so her family borrowed money so she could enroll at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While there, she became a regular contributor to the Nebraska State Journal. She then moved to Pittsburgh, where she taught high school English and worked for Home Monthly, and eventually got a job offer from McClure's Magazine in New York City. Later, she became the managing editor in 1908. The latter publication serialized her first novel, Alexander's Bridge (1912), which was heavily influenced by Henry James. For her novels she returned to the prairie for inspiration, and these works became popular and critical successes. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for One of Ours (1922). Her other works include O Pioneers (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), My Antonia (1918) and A Lost Lady (1923).

Cather is at her best when writing about characters in Nebraska. There are a handful of stories set in New York. Those are good, but for the most part they don't ring as true as those set in Nebraska. The essays are illuminating. Thanks to those, I've started re-reading Stephen Crane and Edgar Allen Poe. That alone would make this book worth reading in the first place.Product details

A Collection of Stories Reviews and Essays edition by Willa Cather Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Being a Cather fanatic, I think that there are only excellent Cather writings!
Some of Cather's best short stories are included in this collection. Her reviews and
essays are treated with the hard wit and unfiltered opinions of her early years
which make for delightful reading.
Brilliant
The stories are beautiful gems, some very brief and intense and some longer. All are brilliant in capturing the landscape, the atmosphere, the personalities of individuals and the relationships they experience. "Eric Hermannson's Soul" is simply heart-rending.
As far as I am concerned Willa Cather provides as fine a group of short stories available. She was very popular when she wrote for publications at the turn of the last century. Anyone interested in the life of ordinary American folk at the time Cather wrote, this collection provides a very interesting sample. Each of her novels I have read have been wonderful. Her short stories are a match. I wish I had discovered her sooner. The correspondence portion of the book held my interesting less, but her thoughts of her contemporaries, adds zest to my reading of other late 19th century writers.
The works of a master writer ate a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this grouping of essays and stories
What can I say? This woman can write! After reading this book I bought and read everything I could find by her. She really had a wonderful understanding of the prarie and the people who settled there.
i like willa cather's writing and was interested in what she thought of other writers of her time. she lists her reviews of many of them in this book. i sampled some of them but she's my favorite. she's so descriptive but not as boringly so as others.
